Madison Gardens is a building on Kings Highway in Brooklyn. Check out those great letters over the doors.

Akzidenz as porcelain enamel as metal signage, from the Canarsie subway stop in Brooklyn. There’s a lesson here. See how much better that looks than all the new black signs with sticker letters? See how much better it looks than cheap vinyl banners? Think about that when you design a sign. Finding people who know how to do great work with great materials is worth it. If it isn’t torn down, this sign will still look great after the current generation of crappy signs are falling apart and barely readable. Do your clients a favor and spec something great.

I’m not so impressed with the font as I am with the tight turning radius and handling of a Toyota Yaris. But that’s pretty much the point, so bravo to PleaseLetMeDesign for the best car advertisement I’ve seen in years. I expect this one will win some well-deserved awards.

Ellen McFadden’s killer Flickr sets

Ellen McFadden has some of the best typography and graphic design Flickr sets I’ve come across. Lots of great modernism and pomo, including Tschichold, Vignelli, and Greiman.

Brooklyn does it better

Manhattan has plenty of great letters, but there are some real treasures out in Brooklyn. This metal signage hangs over the entrance to the Kings Highway station. The newer sign in the background might be more informative, but the old metal sign, even with half of it’s letters falling apart, still destroys the modernist stuff in the aesthetics department.

T in the Village

I don’t know anything about this building other than it happens to have a gorgeous letter T on it.
